Chapter Eight

Amelia and Jackson lived in the newer part of town, but the contractors took great strides to make sure the houses matched the town’s aesthetic. Turn of the century seaside village is what ninety percent of the town looked like. I called both their cell phones while Moss drove, and both went directly to voice mail. Moss pulled up to their little house after heeding my directions, and everything looked normal. Their cars weren’t in the driveway, which was the only thing that looked odd to me. They worked from home, running a monthly magical subscription service to supplement their income when they weren’t working for the police. It was rare for both their cars to be gone.

“How long since you heard from them?” Moss asked as we got out of his car.

“Last I heard from Amelia was that text she sent overnight. Jackson, I haven’t seen in about a week, but the last text I had from him was two days ago. They seemed fine, except for that little anxiety dance Amelia did in the morgue.”

We walked up to the front door, and Moss rang the doorbell. “Do they have any family around here?” I could hear the doorbell inside the home but no footsteps on their creaky wooden floor.

“No, they’re both only children, and their parents live on the East Coast, I think?” Moss rang the bell again, but no one answered. I knocked on the door, and it opened slightly.

“That’s lucky.” Moss pushed the door open a bit more.

“Yeah.” I wasn’t about to tell him I had permission to knock on their door to open it. A little witchy protection goes a long way.

“Jackson! Amelia! This is Detective Moss with the Arion Police. Are you here?” No answer. I peeked inside and saw their couch overturned, and the crocheted blankets that usually draped the back of it were ripped and scattered around the room.

“It does look like there was a scuffle in there.” The television above the fireplace was also on the ground, smashed.

“I’m going to call this in. Stay out here just in case.” I nodded, and he stepped back to his car to contact the precinct. I paced the front porch, rubbing my arms. I could feel the aura of a powerful spell inside, but like the spell at the precinct, I didn’t recognize it.

Moss came walking back up to the porch, unbuttoning his suit jacket. “Since you haven’t heard from them and the door is unlocked, we can go and check, but don’t touch anything in case.”

“Gotcha.” I let him take point as he opened the door a little more with his foot.

“Arion police!” He announced our presence, and we walked inside. “Is anyone home?” I folded my arms against my stomach, trying to keep my ‘touch everything’ instinct in check. I walked to where I felt the unusual spell. It was at the end of the front hallway on the left. That was their witchy room. I had been in there so many times I could walk around with my eyes closed.
